Victoria wrapped her arms around her chest almost protectively. This couldn’t beat her. There was no way something so insignificant could worm it’s way into her mind. She and Mike had been together for going on seven years now. She was engaged for Pete’s sakes, only months away from her wedding and marrying the man of her dreams. This couldn’t possibly be enough to break their streak.

So…why was she spending so much time thinking about what had happened?

She brushed the single tear running down her cheek away fervently, adamant about not letting something as petty as this make her cry. Really, what would it solve? She and Mike would have a normal dinner like always, and this would all be water under the bridge by tomorrow morning.

“Hey there, sweet pea!”

Victoria jumped at the sudden voice, whipping around to see a younger woman dressed in a purple gown practically bouncing with joy behind her. “Er, hi? Do I know you?”

“Oh no, but I know you. Victoria Lynn Blanchard, twenty five year old school teacher from the little town of Asbury, Michigan. The NFGA handbook suggests that you should get to know your ward before their first wish, so I’ve done my research!” The mysterious woman replied, gesturing broadly to the confused young woman in front of her.

“…My fiance’s in the other room, lady, and I’ve got the police on speed dial.” Victoria muttered, standing warily from the bed and backing away slowly towards the door.

The woman’s eyebrows knit together for a brief moment before she let out a tinkling laugh. “Oh! Ha, yes, guideline number 14. You see, I’m your fairy godmother! I’m here to help!”

Victoria’s eyes flickered from the woman’s smiling face to the stick with a glittery, purple star on the tip. “I’m serious! He’s got sharp knives out there, and the police can be here in under six minutes!”

“Here, I’ll prove it.” The woman closed her eyes for a brief moment, raising her stick above her head. Suddenly, her eyes popped open and a beam of light shot from the tip, raining over the two in a shower of crystals. “See?”

Victoria retrieved her jaw from the floor after a few wordless moments staring at the last particle of light fall to the floor. “…Okay, so…fairy godmother-“

“Please, call me Mara.”

“Alright, Mara…why are you…”

“Why am I here?” Victoria nodded silently, her eyes still wide with confusion and wonder. “After their training is completed, Godmothers are alerted of their ward’s unhappiness through their tears. But not just any tears; the Tears of Crossroads. These occur only a handful of times in a life, when a ward is feeling the most lost in decision making. This is where we come in to make the decision easier!”

“B-but I’m not making a decision! I mean, yes, I cried a little, but I’m perfectly happy!” Victoria stammered nervously, her head beginning to throb. “Well…okay, so there is one thing, but it’s so insignificant that it doesn’t even matter!”

“That’s not what the tears say. Come on, tell me what happened.” Mara replied, taking a seat on the queen sized bed and patting the space beside her.

Victoria took the seat nervously, rubbing her arm with her right hand. “Okay, so…Mike and I went out to see this play tonight, and it was great, but as we were walking to the car…this bigger guy came up to me and started hitting on me. And Mike tried to stop him, but…he’s about my height, and I’m only five foot six, so he didn’t get very far. The guy went away, but I can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if the guy hadn’t had given up so easily.”

“So, you’re afraid that it might happen again?” Her godmother replied, patting her leg reassuringly.

“You have to understand; Mike is my soul mate. I’ve been in love with him since he asked me to the Senior Prom seven years ago. We’re getting married in June, and I couldn’t be more sure that I need him in my life. But…it’s superficial, I know, but if he were just a little bit taller, everything would be absolutely perfect. I could wear heels and not have to bend down to kiss him! I wouldn’t have to worry about bigger guys flirting with me! That’s the only thing I want.”

“That’s it? That’s an easy one, sweet pea!” Mara cried, jumping up from the bed. With a flourish of her wand, a silver beam of light burst from her wand and traveled through the room and underneath the door, disappearing from sight. “Done!”

“W-what do you mean, done?” Victoria asked, sliding off her perch on the bed. “I wanted to talk to Mike before anything happened, just in case he wanted to have a say!”

“Oh. Well, still, what harm could a few inches do?“

Victoria wrapped her arms around herself, suddenly guilt-ridden. Mike was an architect; it was his job to pay attention to small details, and he was good at it. Depending on how much he actually grew, he would definitely notice if they no longer stood eye to eye. Then she would be forced to explain how she almost completely disregarded his feelings and made him the perfect image that *she* wanted him to be. She shook her head adamantly. "I take it back, I want to talk to him first."

Mara's eyebrows knitted suddenly, as if Victoria had begun speaking an entirely different language. "Take it back?"

“Tori?!” Victoria jumped to hear her fiance’s voice shriek her name from the kitchen. She looked briefly at her godmother before throwing the door open and running down the dimly lit hall to the kitchen.

“Mike! Mike, what’s-“ She cut off, stumbling back to the wall at the sight before her. There was her husband-to-be, glowing in a silver light and rapidly growing several feet above her head. Just then her fairy godmother appeared in a flash of similarly silver light, her jaw dropping at her mistake.

Victoria gestured wildly at her boyfriend, opening and closing her mouth several times, yet failing to form the appropriate words. Finally she stopped, looking desperately at her godmother.

“Uh…I guess it’s a good thing you just asked for him to be a little taller, huh?” Mara joked, her laughter petering out after a few moments of stunned silence from the couple. “Okay, so you’re my first ward, and maybe I got a little over excited with my first spell, and I wanted to be a nature spirit anyway, flowers are more my thing-“

“Tori?” Mike asked warily, peeling his eyes off the woman for a brief moment to look at his now diminutive wife. “Who’s the crazy lady ranting in our kitchen? And more importantly, would you happen to have an inkling as to why I’m now about twenty feet tall?”

“Turns out the crazy lady is my fairy godmother, and she heard my wish through my Tears of Crossroads that I wanted to make you taller, but she ended up making you gigantic. There, now…now you know about as much as I do.” Victoria answered blankly, failing to settle on an emotion to feel at the moment. She pursed her lips, switching her gaze from her fiancé to her godmother. Her eyes settled for a moment on Mike’s gentle blue gaze, the very eyes she had fallen in love with so many years ago. The same eyes that brought her back to reality. “Mara…is there any way I can return the wish? Some kind of reversal spell maybe?”

“Uh…unfortunately, there’s a three month minimum waiting period between wishes. So until then…I can’t help you. But I’ll be back…what is it, the third? Yep, the third of May to return him back to normal.” Mara cleared her throat, giving a small bow to the couple. “Congratulations about the wedding b-by the way, you guys make a cute couple, so I’ll see you SOON GOTTA GO BYE!” And with a flourish of her wand, she was gone.

Victoria glanced at Mike for a minute before returning her gaze to the spot her godmother had just vanished from. She heard her fiancé clear his throat high above her head, shifting into a sitting position on the floor. “I know you hate to cook, but the stew is only halfway done, and I’m a little incapacitated at the moment.”

She shook her head as if shaken out of her thoughts. "W-what?" She stuttered, completely flabbergasted.

"The stew, I need someone to finish it." Mike replied, carefully sitting on the carpeted ground. Even seated, he towered over his trembling wife by at least a few feet.

"Are you kidding me?" Mike had always been calm under pressure, but this was getting ridiculous. Victoria froze as she saw her husband to be slowly reaching towards her with a hand that could easily...she didn't even want to think about what he could easily do. She drew in a sharp breath as his fingers lightly wrapped around her shoulder and upper back, but quickly softened under his touch. It was still the same Mike, just a little bigger.

“I promised we’d have a normal dinner, and we’re going to have a normal dinner. Just under abnormal circumstances." Mike said quietly, careful not to frighten her. He could only imagine what he must look like from his perspective. "Carrots are in the fridge.”
